Working with Scons

Sunday, June 6th, 2010

I’ve been working to create my own software for a while called myToolbox. It was origianlly created using PHP, Javascript, and MySQL, however, I’ve now decided to move to using Java. Doing so has been both enlightening and frustrating as moving towards a new programming language is not always easy. Especially, when one is moving to a language that is as strict as Java. (more…)

For those looking for an alternative Operating System to Microsoft Windows I just thought I would post that Ubuntu 10.04 was released a few weeks ago. Check out the new version on their main page:

Ubuntu 10.04

While I personally am looking way to move to a more Freedom orientent version of GNU Linux, like gNewSense, I do recommend Ubuntu as a start OS for people looking to explore alternatives to Windows. Check it out when you get a chance.

Ebon Moglen and Freedom Software

Saturday, May 1st, 2010

Eben Moglen is an intelligent and wise lawyer who’s helped to create the framework under which the GNU General Public License. That license has been responsible for creating much of the software that runs many of the servers that run the Internet, and many of the Linux desktops we use. I recently found this video of his speaking about the future of Free Software, Intellectual Property, and the Creative Commons. (more…)

Blender and the RoboThespian

Friday, February 26th, 2010

As I’ve told so many people, the future is really about openness. Here is an example of a really creative use of Blender.
Several engineers and designers got together to create a robot for people to toy around with. (more…)

Compiling and Running Blender 2.5

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

So I’ve been itching to get my fingers on the development build of Blender 2.5. Mainly because I want to start becoming familiar with the new features and interface, and I want to start experimenting with some of the source code. So I began by following the directions from the Blender developer site. The build process was not that hard for me even though it took about 3 hours for me to resolve some of the build errors I was getting. The reason it was pretty easy is because there was a lot of documentation through various parts of the web which explain how to do this. So I just read through some of them and eventually got the build to function properly without any errors. Now I have Blender 2.5 running on my system and will continue to get updates as we move through the development process.

Experimenting with Blender 2.5

Sunday, September 6th, 2009

Many of the Blender developers are hard at work making sure version 2.5 is everything they say it will be. I decided to begin using the development builds, which can be found at: http://www.graphicall.org/builds/

You can begin using the program but be cautious because it contains several bugs and unimplemented features as the developers work hard to put it all together. Check out this video for a summary of what’s currently in the new version:

Blender 2.5, – Got flexible? from Pablo Vazquez on Vimeo.

I’ve also spent a little bit of time practicing my painting skills:

Software: MyPaint
Time: 4 hours

As well, as programming. I put together a registration form for AZHS’s new community table. Soon I will work on getting the backend side of the software up and running.

There’s also my part time job that I go to 4 out of 7 days a week. Things aren’t too bad for me. C ya.

myToolBox Software Development: Update 00

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

So this is the first post I am making on the development of the myToolBox web application. These are just a simple set of tools to use along side other web applications. I am developing them for Arizona Homegrown Solutions to help solve some small little problems we are running into here and there. Right now it is not all that impressive since a lot of the development time has been spent learning javascript, php, and mysql. I knew them to some degree before due to my exposure making web applications in the Ruby on Rails platform, but not to the degree I know now. (more…)

PPG Community Garden, My Hole in the Ground, and Software Development

PPG Community Gardeners Meeting
So yesterday the PPG had it’s monthly community garden meeting and it went pretty good. I arrived about 15 minutes late so by that time the participants had already broken into two groups. I joined a group and met Lisa and Cheryl who both work in the nursing industry. Lisa is a billing specialist and Cheryl is an infant care nurse. Both of them have little to no experience gardening but were really wanting to join the effort in starting something here in the valley by volunteering their time. So the three of us sat down and brain stormed a few ideas. Not that any of these ideas can happen now, but we thought it would be good to still put them out there and add to the idea bucket.
